Considerations for a Properly Sized Air Conditioner

Picking the right size air conditioner isn’t just about finding the biggest, most powerful unit you can afford; it’s about finding the perfect fit for keeping your home or office space cool and comfortable. Learn some expert tips on how we properly size an air conditioner at Primo Heat.

Learn how to properly maintain an AC unit.

1. Measure the Space & the Driver

Installing an AC unit should start with measuring the size of the space. In theory, there should be an allowance of about 20 BTUs for every square metre of living space. So, for example, a 46-square-metre room would need about 10,000 BTUs to keep the space cool. Given the room size, and depending on the type of system, we heavily consider how the air will move or what’s driving the cool!

2. Calculate the Room Height and Layout

High ceilings mean more air to cool, lower ceilings can mean less. An open-plan area might need a different approach compared to a space with lots of small rooms or walls or even custom partitions.

3. Know How Much Sunlight and Shade You Get

Consider how much sun hits your home or office. Do you have a lot of windows with sunny exposures? If so, you’ll need to consider how to offset your environmentally caused heat load. Lots of shade? Great! We consider that naturally occurring energy in the Summer.

4. Consider the Insulation

Good insulation allows for less air leakage, or loss. If your space is well insulated, an AC won’t have to work as hard. Investing in better insulation, like windows, doors, or throughout an attic space could mean more energy-efficiency, saving you money in the long run.

5. Consider Other Heat Sources

Think about other things that generate heat, like appliances and electronics, or even the number of people typically in the room being cooled. All these factors can influence the size of the AC unit you might need.
